After overhearing Peek and Puck (Halfling Adventurers Extrodinare) discussing a recent encounter with a mysterious creature, the adventurers asked them their tale. They quickly discovered that Peek had been bitten by an unseen creature that had tried to haul him off in the night. After discovering that there was a bounty on this monster from a local village, the adventurers asked if they might be able to try to solve the situation. The Halflings sent the party to a local wizard (Schmendrik the Magnificent), who told them that it was he himself who was offering the reward. He also offered to teleport them to the village free of charge (it was many months distant across the sea). Feeling that they were prepared, the adventurers were teleported there (with small tokens enchanted to return them to Rook once their task was complete).
The adventurers found themselves standing outside of a small tribal village in a vast savanna. The locals were mostly human, with some half elves, all dark of skin and speaking some form of Aklo as their native tongue. They made their way to speak with the Tribal Chief and the Shaman. Asking a few questions they discovered that the creatures only attacked during the night, and that they used the same tactics as some Lions that had plagued the village in the past. The adventurers took up a post on the most likely path of approach as night settled in.
Hearing and seeing nothing approach, the adventurers were startled by a scream coming from the north side of the village. Hurrying into the night, they found a trail of blood leading into the darkness. Steeling themselves, they raced off into the black to confront the creature. Easily following the fresh blood trail they found themselves confronted by a massive black lion, but before it could approach Countess quickly snared it in a mass of thorns and waving black tentacles, eventually adding a cloud of sulfurous fumes to incapacitate the beast. Meanwhile, the unquiet spirit of a second lion attempted to approach unseen. Spotting the ghost out of the corner of his eye, Faust quickly moved to intercept it. Countess, seeing the approaching spirit, quickly blinded it with an offhand glitterdust spell. Unable to see, the creature did it's best to attack it's targets, as the shadowy black lion struggled to free itself. All the while the creatures were being assaulted with spell, hammer, and staff. After a short but furious battle, the party was able to destroy the malevolent spirit. Turning their attention to the still struggling black lion, countess managed to put it to sleep. Dismissing her previous spells to allow the party to approach, Countess stood back as Saugrak efficiently put the creature out of it's misery.
Using his knowledge of things spiritual and natural, Faust determined that the best course of action would be to leave the creature to the scavangers as was the natural order. Also determining that the spirit of the ghostly lion was likely to return, the group returned to the village to inform the Chief that the skull they had kept as a trophy from the previous attacks was most likely the cause of this ghostly menace. Quickly smashing the skull, the shaman cast some warding spells over the fragments of bone to prevent the beast from returning.
Bidding their farewells, the adventurers activated their tokens and found themselves once again standing in front of The Golden Goose tavern, among the buildings of Rook's Hearth District. Collecting their reward, they went inside to share thier tale with Peek and Puck over some nice tea and a slice of blueberry pie.
