Summary:
The adventurers were hired by a dwarf named Sethok Smitherson to clear out a group of orcs from the a historical battlesite his grandfather had died at. The pc's rushed off to slaughter the orcs, and heard wardrums as they approached. As they moved closer to the hill upon which the dwarven ancestor was slain, the drumming got farther to the north. It seems the warband was leaving. Deciding to check out the hill, to make sure no orcs remained, the group readied itself and snuck up. As got to the base of the hill, Magnus discovered some blood, and Viktor soon caught the scent of some terrible beast. A reptilian musk filled the air, and as they pondered it, they heard a hiss atop the hill. It was around that time, Ilena, and Viktor simultaneously realized what they were up against. When the bulk of the warband moved away, a bulette had approached and slain the small force left to defend the hill.
The battle was hard fought, and Ilena narrowly escaped death as the best burst from the ground intent on devouring her. The party laid into it, and it retreated. They saw the armored fin crest the surface of the soil, and till it aside as the beast approached the horses. Moments passed, perhaps too long as they returned to the horses and readied to strike the creature should it show itself again.
Little did they know, up the hill, above a ridge of stone, the creature had surfaced in a patch of soft ground, and readied itself to leap down from the ledge above. Readied though they were, their combined attacks were unable to stop the beast as it lept forward, and managed to catch Ilena with one of the claws from it's left front, and rear claws, and Cydo with both claws from the right. Cydo was knocked unconscious immediately, as the creature landed heavily beside him. It focused its attention on the two heavily injured party members, and was clearly going to strike at them both again, when Drakovan splashed the beast with acid, and Magnus finished it off with a mighty blow from his hammer.
They surveyed the hill, and found it was lined with blood covered spears, each planted firmly into the ground pointing directly up into the sky. A fire dwindled atop the hill as well, but Drakovan drenched it compulsively. As the party stood, surveying the scene Ilena, and Magnus spotted a lone figure atop a nearby ridge. Big, even for an orc, stood Vul Azuk Klodh'Bal, who stood with his spear planted point down into the ground. As he began to speak to the party, Drakovan leapt to the assault sending forth a thundercloud. Lightning struck him several times, though he hardly flinched at each as he spoke in Orcish. Ilena translated that he would overlook the trespass, for having slain the creature that had killed his kinsmen. Drakovan pressed the assault, launching a second thundercloud at the orc chieftain, and Ilena followed with a salvo of magic missiles that toppled the chieftain. At that, the group heard yips and hollers as his loyal subjects, who had been inspecting the dead bulette, decided to slight the ones who attacked their wise chieftain, by relieving them of their horses.
Azuk screamed, "Leave now, or I will kill you all." in orcish, which Ilena did not translate, but merely started to depart. Azuk could not strike and kill the ones who had slain his kinsmen, not today any how. There were traditions to be followed, and it would bring terrible luck to break them.
The party walked back to Rook, and it was discovered that the warband had left the hill soon after their departure in anticipation of reinforcements. The dwarf, true to his word, paid the party for a job well done.
