Arno stood next to the keg in a moment of rare reflection. They had to be coming back for the stew, it was just that good. You wouldn’t find a bowl in the slums with better ingredients that he used, because he always stuck to mum’s recipe to the very letter.
This lot was odder than most adventurers though, nobody talked, they all just sat staring into their drinks. Were they becoming regulars? This could be good for business! Just about when that thought came rolling around in Arno’s alcohol addled brain, the door swung open and in strode a young nobleman. A noble! In the Spiggot! His mum’d be proud, she would!
The man called out awkwardly for adventurers, looking around the place with a bit of disdain. As he was answered by the four sitting in the tavern, Arno realized he went from having a busy night, to a slow one as every single one of his customers were about to be on the job. He needed the Spiggot’s only customers to go and check out a basement! What about Arno? Not that he wanted to go on adventure, he just wanted a bit of luck to come his way. Nobby bastard, Arno thought, I hope it’s a bunch of rats, and they’ve made a mess of things.
“The workmen were doing renovations in the basement, when they found the passageway. They shant resume the work, or even close it up until someone has checked it out.” he sighed, unhappy with the inconvenience to his business itinerary. With that, the party set off to the old magic shop, to check out the mysterious passageway.
As they entered, the party caught a glimpse of a homunculus, as it turned and darted off into the shadows. They moved forward coming to three large waist-high stone water basins. Testing the depth with her staff, Usiel realized that the water was deeper than her quarterstaff was long. As the party pondered this oddity, four disgusting undulating globules rose out of the stagnant water and surged forward.
The party slaughtered the initial wave of amoebas, and crept forward to hear another screech of metal on metal, and a gurgling sound reminiscent of something viscous making its way through pipes. As they rounded a corner, they spotted two more basins, one at the southern end of the hall, and another at the north. Air bubbles created a tumultuous surface, in the formerly placid basins, as four of the jelly-like amoebas slid out of each. They turned to see four more coming from behind, and the fight was on. The amoebas were easy to hit, but hit hard, splattering a small amount of digestive acid each time they landed a blow on one of the adventurers.
Wounded, the party surged on, still fighting amoebas as they saw a large brass valve at the end of a chamber. Usiel, and Alath worked towards closing the valve. Usiel spotted the homunculus hiding next to a crate, and turned her attentions towards it, as Kasidra and Cydo slaughtered wave after wave of amoeba. Meanwhile, the crate the homunculus had been hiding behind started to shift, and jerk, as if something had been trying to get out. Little did they know, that there was in fact nothing inside, but the crate itself was reactivating as the dwindling magics that enchanted it fought to animate it.
With the valve closed, new amoeba stopped arriving, and their numbers dwindled quickly when all of a sudden the crate tumbled forward, like a six sided die smashing into Usiel. To further complicate matters, Alath succumbed to the insidious venom of the homunculus and fell into a deep slumber. After that, the crate slammed itself into Kasidra repeatedly, until she finally fell unconscious. Both Usiel and Cydo fought valiantly, and as Usiel was on the cusp of consciousness, Cydo landed a well placed arrow which caused the enchanted box to clatter lifelessly to the ground.
They made their way to their employer’s home to collect payment, and found it to be somewhat modest by noble means, but still far beyond their own current finances. He regretted having purchased the shop in the first place, but thanked the adventurers for their service, gave them their payment.
